How to: Make a Paper Ornament Tree Advent Calendar

DIY Advent Tree

What do you do when you want a Christmas tree and an advent calendar, but you live in a tiny space? You make an advent calendar out of paper and and it becomes your tree, that's what!

We live in a pretty small apartment and it's tough to have a Christmas tree up during the holiday season. We love the festiveness that it brings, but we don't love the precious space that it occupies. So, this year, we're rockin' around a paper tree by hanging a bunch of paper ornaments on the wall in a tree shape. Puts me right in the Christmas spirit! Check out the how-to below to make your own!

Materials:

  • 10 sheets of cardstock in a few different colors (I used mint, emerald, pink, and gold glitter)
  • pencil
  • gold sharpie marker
  • scissors
  • vintage ornament templates (simply search online for shapes you like!)
  • sewing machine
  • glue dots for hanging

Download, print, and cut the ornament templates. Using the pencil, trace them onto your cardstock until you have 50 shapes. Write out the numbers 1-25 on 25 of your cardstock ornaments. Write out in different fonts, styles, just play with it! Stitch two matching ornaments together leaving a 2 inch opening to stuff your goodies in.

Once you have 25 paper ornaments, it's time to sew them shut to create little paper pouches!

I kind of hate this photo, but you needed to see the sewing in action! Stitch a zigzag stitch along the edge leaving a 2 inch space to seal all your goodies in.

And now, we assemble the tree!

I cut two extra ornaments to act as the "tree stump". Place a small glue dot on the back of each and hang in numerical order. Follow the pattern in the above photos so that you can hang all 25 in a tree-like shape.

Tip: I first used double-stick tape to hang these, and they fell right off the wall. You can see in one of the above photos where an ornament started to tilt. The glue dots are a must-have for this project!

I love how it turned out! I hope I have enough will to rip these open come December 1st!

Happy Holidays!
