Boost Your Roost Contest: Go Vote For Our Finalist!

by on Jul 30, 2012

A few weeks ago, we were thrilled to take part in HouseLogic.com’s Boost Your Roost contest. We received over 300 entries, and it was a real challenge to narrow it down. But after a lot of careful reading, we sent our choices along to HouseLogic, and they chose the entry from Tara Roy of Maine as our finalist. That means Tara has a chance to win a $20,000 home renovation for her and her five kids. But she needs your vote to win! Head over to HouseLogic.com to cast your vote, and read on to see Tara’s contest entry.

Tara’s a foster mom with a big heart and a lot of kids to take care of. Here’s what she had to say about her little clan:

Ashlyn, 7:  A huge heart for sharing her mom (& her toys!) with her “suddenly siblings”.

Brynn, 4:   An unfortunate start to life as a drug exposed baby, rescued by foster care.  So blessed to now call her my daughter.

Chase, 2: Chase has a rare genetic mutation that presents challenges for his development.  But with a nurturing home, I’m delighted to say he is thriving!

Gavin, 1:  How could we say “no” when DHHS called to say Chase had a new brother that needed a home?!?!

Adella, 8 months:  Post infertility miracle baby!

As a foster mom I often hear how lucky these kids are to have me.  My response is always “No, I’m the lucky one”.  I hope some of that luck will garner us a chance to win this amazing contest!

Our Home:  A character filled colonial on ½ acre lot located in the heart of Bangor, ME.

Our Idea:  Renovate our attic into a family focused gathering room.  Our attic space offers potential for a 27 x 27 room with cathedral ceilings that reach 15+ feet.  Six existing windows provide good natural light and an already finished interior staircase beckons!

Scope of Work:   Sheetrock (maintaining dramatic ceiling height); heating (possible fireplace!); Update electrical/lighting; new subfloor & finish flooring; trim & paint.  Design ideas: Upcycle old windows on interior wall to let in additional light from stairway landing. Add built-in storage to maximize kneewall space.  Estimated cost $25 per square foot.

Result:  Add 700+ square feet of living space, a boost of $30,000 in potential equity value (150% ROI!).   Help give me the extra space to make this home a true “forever home” for my kids.

If you’d like to see Tara and her kids win the $20000 prize, please go vote for them now!

And thanks to everyone who entered the contest; we would have liked to pick all of you, and really enjoyed reading through your entries.
