Sleeper Survey #1: Do You Make Your Bed?

Sleeper Survey: do you make the bed?

It's Bedroom Month here on Curbly, so this week, we're kicking off a series called "Sleeper Survey" all about the hidden habits of the Curbly Reader's boudoir. We're starting off pretty tame, with a question about your bed-making tendencies (don't worry, we'll turn up the controversy next week). Read on to cast your vote and see the results so far!

(Please vote only once)

Don't worry, your response is completely anonymous and we're just collecting this unscientific info for fun and conversation.

Speaking of which, don't stop at answering the survey! Chime in with a comment about why you do (or don't, or don't know how to) make the bed!

WHO THE FOCK NEEDS TO CHANGE SHEETS EVERY WEEK?! Holy crap first of all if married go do it in other places. Maybe try the kitchen or bathtub for once. Or do it on top of the bed sheets. Second, are people so damn sweaty like a hog when they sleep? Wow. I rarely change sheets unless it finally gets dirty which is very seldom because i'm not a dirty person. However I do fix my bed every day, at night time.

Tough question. I straighten my half every morning but don't really care what it looks like. My husband NEVER makes his side and I leave it that way. At night I make sure the covers on his side are not pulled over too far and call it a night. I guess I'm half always and half never.

Constance Edwards on Feb 13, 2012:

I unmake it. We live in a dry climate so dust mites have a tough time surviving as is, but they'd do better if the warmth and moisture got trapped in our bedding every day. Given my partner's wretched allergies, I do everything I can to minimize his exposure. That means letting the bedding air out, all day, every day. We have a bedroom door. It stays closed for a reason.

Even though I love the look of a made bed, ours only gets made when company's coming or the sheets have been washed. When it is made, I feel more at ease that something looks nice in our bedroom istead of the usual dishelved mess. I know I should make it more often, but I'm always in a rush in the mornings

We make our bed every day, and taught our kid to do so too.  It makes the room presentable, in case someone visits.  Also it makes you feel accomplished first thing in the morning.  Change the sheets once a week. ( or when dirty... more than once a week...LOL).

I am a husband that makes sure my side of the bed is straight and even when I first get up. Ever wonder why you have all the covers or no covers in the morning? Since I am the last one to bed, I have made my cell phone sreen a bright solid color to use for night operations. I check all layers of the covers, peeling them from the top corner, one by one. If I find the sheet is out of sync with the covers, I know my wife is gripping the sheet and that means the covers on her side are usually pushed to the middle or one of her legs has been used to kick away the lower corner to keep cool. Since my wife has hot flashes at night, I put a heavy pillow half way down the bed to prevent waking up sweating because the covers have folded over on to me. I am also tall with big feet, so I use a sheet corner strap to keep my feet covered up, but loose engough to lay on my back without the covers trying to crush my toes. Use these tips to make sure you are the one that is not a cover hog or shivering in the middle of the night. Yes, the pillow works as a great cover anchor.

The bed is made everyday. It makes me commit to getting up in the morning and not be tempted to crawl back into my warm sheets. Plus, it makes the bedroom feel calmer and cleaner, and I really love my bedding, so seeing it at it's full glory everyday is a great pick me up!

Stephaniebug on Feb 10, 2012:

I never used to see the point, but my husband ALWAYS makes the bed.  He got me back in the habit of it.  It does make the entire bedroom just look and feel more clean and put together.  Which is good, because I am notorious for a messy bedroom!

Kerry on Feb 09, 2012:

does straightening out the duvet count?  That's all it takes to make mine, which is why I don't use a top sheet anymore.  Takes me 10 seconds, max!

Keter on Feb 09, 2012:

I guess I'm a quiet sleeper because I can just roll out, pull the covers up over the pillow, and it's done enough.  By the time things start to get disarrayed enough to require "making," it's time to change the sheets anyway.

Friends and family always pop in and out at my house and to get to the bathroom you have to walk through our bedroom. If it wasn't for that, I would probably make it less often. I always feel gross when I have to walk through someone's bedroom and it's a mess and would hate for our guests to feel that way.

Cindy on Feb 09, 2012:

I make my bed (or my husband does if he gets to it first) every morning. I don't think I could get into bed at night if it was unmade-I'd probably have to make it first! Silly but probably a habit since I was 5 yrs old.

DesigningMom on Feb 09, 2012:

I'm a cross between every day and never. Everyday, without fail, I place the pillows at the head of the bed then straighten and pull the coverings up to them. I don't make it perfect as if company were to see it so I'm not sure what to choose.

Erin C on Feb 09, 2012:

I tuck in sheets, fluff pillows and turn the covers up most of the year.

In the summer, however, I turn the covers down to let the sheets dry/air out (North Carolina summers are sweaty) which keeps them fresher and bacteria growth to a minimum!

@maritza - oooh good questiona bout linens. We'll have to add that one to the survey next week!

Maritza on Feb 09, 2012:

I don't move around much at night so it's pretty easy to just reposition the duvet in the morning.  It doesn't really count as "bed making" to me as compared with some people who thrash about at night.  I'm curious as to how often people change their linens...

bruno on Feb 09, 2012:

Um, I'm in the never camp, where never=rarely.

CapreeK on Feb 09, 2012:

I think I make my bed... oh, three times a month.  But I always feel better when it's made, so I should probably bump that number up. (Especially since I can see it all day from my office--it looks so sad... I'mma go make it right now!)

Chrisjob on Feb 09, 2012:

I do! Well...six out of seven days a week. It only takes eighty seconds, and really does make my life feel less hectic. Highly recommended.
