Wow…This is Really Nice Garbage Can

by on Mar 23, 2011

I never thought I could get excited by a trashcan. It is, by definition, full of garbage.

But, believe me, friends, the Fingerprint Proof Rectangular Recycler from SimpleHuman is a brilliant example of great design.

Even the box on this guy looks great…and is huge! It should up on my doorstep in the biggest box I’ve seen since my  table saw. I could fit inside. (and did!)

The product page describes the rectangular recycler as a “fingerprint-proof rectangular recycler [with] two color-coded inner buckets (a blue 16L and a black 30L) to separate trash and recyclables. The space-efficient shape and internal hinge allow the recycler to fit close to the wall. Lid shox® slow the motion of the lid to give it a smooth, quiet close and a solid steel pedal provides superior durability.”

The surface really is very, very fingerprint resistant, and provide your hands and feet aren’t covered in liquids or junk, etc, from cooking and whatnot, they’ll rarely leave a mark. Any spot that does show up cleans up easily with some stainless steel cleaner and a chamois.

The separate compartments are awesome. I love that it’s oriented so that it sits parallel to a wall or appliance, which allows it to fit better than my older, perpendicular SimpleHuman trash can, which would block my basement door in my rather small kitchen.

I really like the ability to have both garbage and recycling in the same unit. If you already have a recycling solution, you could use the smaller bin for compost, separating out other items, or even as a two-container recycling solution, as many neighborhoods ask that paper be in its own bin.

The lid/pedal works very well, allowing it to be used with messy hands, and it closes very gently. It also includes this cool lock that allows the lid to stay open, which is helpful when cooking, sorting junk mail, etc.

My only wish is that the unit were designed to accept standard sized trash bags. I mean, yes, I’m here praising its design, but a special trip for garbage bags is unlikely. I understand that SimpleHuman does make their custom bags available at lots of outlets, such as Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but trash bags are the kind of thing that I add to my grocery list, and pick up with other cleaning supplies and necessities. I’ve just been using standard 13-gallon kitchen bags, and while they’re a little small, they do fit well. But, to their credit, SimpleHuman does include a little space in the back that allows you to insert any excess plastic and make non-proprietary bags fit.

It’s not inexpensive at 179.99…Okay, it’s pretty pricey for a trash can, even one with a recycling solution built in. But, if it’s the kind of thing that needs to be left out in the open, it’s a worthwhile investment, and it really does integrate with most kitchen styles. I’ve been using another SimpleHuman trash can for the last four years, and it’s in as good shape as it’s ever been, so I expect this one to last for decades.
